Using Your Network & Connections

Why Aren’t You Reaching Out to Your Network?

If there’s one thing that truly drives me nuts, it’s seeing job seekers apply to hundreds of jobs online with no plan—and without even considering the people they already know. It’s like watching someone try to win the lottery when they already have a winning ticket!

Here’s the reality: Most companies offer referral bonuses to employees who help bring in quality candidates. That means your old colleagues, managers, or even casual connections might actually want to help you. They get the satisfaction of helping someone they know—and a nice bonus to boot.

So why aren’t you tapping into this powerful resource?

Common Excuses (and Why They’re Flawed)

  • “I don’t want to bother anyone.”
Trust me, people are happy to reconnect, especially if you approach it with genuine interest and professionalism. You’re not asking for a handout—you’re exploring opportunities.

  • “They’re probably too busy to help.”
Everyone’s busy, but sending a quick LinkedIn message or an email takes just a few minutes. And if you’re thoughtful and respectful, they’ll likely appreciate the effort.

  • “I don’t have a strong network.”
If you’ve worked anywhere in the past, you have a network. Even acquaintances from previous roles can point you in the right direction. And reconnecting with them might open more doors than you realize.

Here’s a Better Approach

  • List Your Connections. Look at past coworkers, managers, clients, vendors—anyone who might know someone hiring.

  • Reach Out with a Purpose. Craft a message that’s polite, clear, and not desperate. Mention what you’re looking for, ask if they know of any openings, and offer to help them in return.

  • Stay in Touch. Don’t let these connections fade. Keep in touch, share updates, and be there when they need you, too.

  • Combine Networking with Direct Applications. It’s fine to apply online, but always look for an internal connection who can give you a referral or insider insights.

The Missed Opportunity

When candidates blindly submit resumes with no networking strategy, they miss out on:

  • A referral that can fast-track their application.

  • Insight into the company culture and role.

  • A chance to reconnect with former colleagues.

In today’s competitive job market, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Reaching out isn’t just smart—it’s essential.

So before you hit that “Apply Now” button on your next job posting, ask yourself:

Who do I know who can help me open that door?

Stop playing the lottery. Start playing smart.

Hi, I’M Julian…

With 10 years of military service, followed by two decades in corporate environments across the UK and the U.S., and more than a decade as a Technical Recruiter in the staffing industry, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see what truly works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to hiring, leadership, and career growth. I’ve been on both sides of the hiring table, making tough decisions about who joins a team and who doesn’t. Through these experiences, I’ve gained deep insight into the challenges of both leading and being an individual contributor.

I have over 20 years of experience as a senior IT executive and a proven track record of driving productivity and reducing costs, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to career development. My diverse background includes managing large and small technology teams, overseeing multi-million dollar budgets, and leading strategic initiatives to enhance operational effectiveness for both IT organizations and their customers.

My approach is driven by thought leadership, strategic thinking, and a clear understanding of human behavior. I am committed to helping you achieve your career objectives through a repeatable and effective process.
